The Pattern SystemSM for Psychotherapists

Based on 30 years clinical experience, the Pattern SystemSM is also useful for psychotherapists in understanding their clients. It is a new way of organizing our understanding of interpersonal behavior and treatment in psychotherapy. It can help a psychotherapist to:

  • Understand each client’s interpersonal behavior and its underlying psychodynamics.
  • Tailor your treatment strategy to the unique character structure of each client.
  • Know how to proceed when therapy with a particular client is stalled.

These writings are based on an older version of the Pattern SystemSM, so some details won't be consistent with the latest system.

Transference and Countertransference. The Pattern SystemSM describes various typical transference and countertransference reactions for each pattern.

Personality Disorders and the Pattern SystemSM. A table showing the relationship between each personality disorder and the Pattern SystemSM.

Interpersonal Patterns in Group Psychotherapy. The rough draft of a manuscript on how the Pattern SystemSM can be used to understand members of interpersonal therapy groups.
